Prepositions are short words (on, in, to) that usually stand in front of nouns (sometimes also in front of gerund verbs). Below is the full list of prepositions with their use and examples in English and Hindi (for Indian users).
Hindi: किसी चीज में / अंदर
English: If person/thing is inside other thing (building, car, time frame etc) and he talks about himself or things there then he will use “In”.
Example: I am in kitchen, Ram is in car, This festival is in April, in winter, in morning, in 2010 etc.
Hindi: बाहर से अंदर जाने का कार्य
English: If something is going from outside to inside a building or other thing.
Example: Ram is going into the house. (Means Ram is outside house and going into the house.)
Hindi: ठीक बाहर वाले वयक्ति के लिए अंदर वाली चीज़
English: If a person is outside a building or something and he talks about other person/thing that is inside the building then we will use “Inside”.
Example: If I am outside house and Ram is in the house then I will say “Ram is inside the house”.
Out of Something (city, office etc):
Hindi: किसी चीज़ के बाहर
Hindi: अंदर से बहार जाने का कार्य
Hindi: अंदर वाले वयक्ति के लिए ठीक बहार वाली चीज़
English: If a person is inside a building or something and he talks about other person/thing that is outside the building then he will use “Outside”.
Example: If I am inside house and Ram is outside then I will say “Ram is outside the house”.
Next to/ Beside:
Hindi: बगल में, पास में
English: If something is adjacent or near to other thing we can use Next to or Beside.
Example: In the classroom, Ram is sitting next to Sham. or Ram is sitting Beside Sham.
Hindi: लम्बी चौड़ी चीज़ के किनारे पर स्थिर (not moving) कोई चीज़
English: When somebody is using some medium for its purpose
Example: Ram is going to Agra by car .
Hindi: लम्बी चौड़ी चीज़ के किनारे कोई कार्य
English: this is used to show movement following the line
Example: we walked along the river .
Hindi: सहारे लदा हुआ
English: along something
Example: Ladder is placed against the wall.
In Front Of:
Hindi: सामने (स्थिर)
English: facing something
Example: We parked the car in front of the garden .
She put the flower on the table in front of me .
Hindi: सामने (चलता हुआ)
Hindi: आगे आने वाला है पर दिखाई नहीं दे रहा है
Hindi: सभा या दरबार के सामने
English: before is used in reference to two events .
Example: The train had left before he reached the station
Hindi: उस पार / इस पार से उस पार
Hindi: ऊपर से कवर करता हुआ / ऊपर
English:(1) covering from outside (2) higher in rank etc
Example: She lives over this mountain . (covering )
He is over me (rank )
Hindi: नीचे से कवर करता हुआ / नीचे
English: under a certain limit /level
Example : Fishes are moving under the bridge .
Hindi: किसी चीज के ऊपर होना
English: On is used for surface , for existing surface etc
Example: Snow fell on the hills .
Riya was sitting on her bag
Underneath / Beneath:
English: under or below
Example: I can not see the muscles of his shoulders beneath his T-shirt .
Hindi: ऊपर की ओर वाला Action
English: when somebody is acting in upward direction
Example: The birds are flying up .
Hindi: नीचे की ओर वाला Action
English: When somebody is acting in downward direction
Example: She sat down to dine before the round table .
Hindi: Limit के ऊपर
English: higher than any level
Example: The helicopter hovered above us .
Hindi: Limit के नीचे
English : lower than any level .
Example: He placed the lamp below the almirah.
Beyond / Out Of:
Hindi: Limit के बाहर
English: outside some particular range
Example: The animals should be out of the city .
With In / In:
Hindi: Limit के अंदर
English: inside some particular range
Example: There should be full decoration within the boundary .
Hindi: Two definite numbers के बीच में
English: between is used for normally two finite numbers or two persons
Example: He distributed his property between his two sons .
Hindi: Indefinite numbers के बीच में
English: When the limits are not finite
Example: She distributed the toffies among the poor .
Hindi: Vowel से शुरू होने वाली Indefinite numbers के बीच में
English: The use of amongst is usually found in literary writings
Example: She distributed the toffies amongst us .
Hindi: कहीं से
English: When something is separating from the other thing .
Example: Two great tears ran slowly from the corners of her eyes .
Hindi: कहीं से दूर
English: Away from
Example: Please keep off the grass .
Hindi: कहीं को
English:this is used for -(1) in the direction of ,(2) destination ,(3) compared with ,(4) with indirect object etc
Example: Turn to the left (direction )
I am going to Agra (destination )
They prefer cricket to hockey (compared with )
Please give it to me (with indirect object )
Hindi: किसी ओर / किसी तरफ / किसी दिशा में
English: this is used to indicate movement in a particular direction
Example: She was running towards the airport .
Everybody is coming towards me etc
Hindi: कहीं पर
English: (1) at is used for precise time (2) at shows the stationary position or existing position etc
Example: I reached home at 9 am (precise time )
He lives at alwar rajasthan (stationary position )
Hindi: शुरू करना
English: To initiate
Example: You should start the race in the morning for good health .
Hindi: बंद करना
English: taking the break
Example: stop writing
Hindi: के बाद
English: after must be followed by a noun , pronoun , or gerund etc
Example: After breakfast , he ordered TAXI .
Hindi: करते हुए / करते समय
English: along with some work or thing
Example: Use of mobile is prohibited while driving .
Hindi: समय के अंतराल के दौरान
English: during is used with known period of time
Example: It rained all Sunday but stopped during the night .
Hindi: समय के अंतराल के दौरान
English: This is used for some time interval may be small or large
Example: India gets freedom in 1947
Hindi: किसी समय तक लगातार नहीं होता हुआ काम
Hindi: किसी समय तक होता हुआ काम पर जिसमे लगातार होने की intention नहीं हो
English: by is used for agents
Example: The application was written by Mahesh with pencil
Hindi: इतने समय से (पक्का समय हो या समय का नाम हो)
English: from fixed interval of time
Example: Ram is studying since 4 am
Hindi: इतने समय से (पक्का समय नहीं हो)
English: time interval which is not fixed
Example: He works for approximately 9 hours a day
Hindi: एक व्यक्ति दो काम अथवा दो व्यक्ति एक काम एक ही समय में करें
English: If there are two subjects for one object or if there are two objects for one subjects
Example: I will complete this whole work along with her .
